Rioja and Marques de Riscal, Spain.

This was one of our small group wine trips when we visited the Rioja wine region in particular Marques de Riscal Winery with its Michelin Star Restaurant.  Nine delectable courses later having started at 1.00pm we were moved to their panoramic lounge to finish our coffee’s making room for the night revellers.   This winery was designed by Frank Gehry the designer of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao making this Hotel a fascinating experience from many points of view.  While in this region we stayed in the walled town of La Guardia with its tiny narrow traffic-less streets.  It rests on a hill top providing 365 degrees views over the rolling vineyards sweeping away to the horizon making it undoubtedly the most attractive town in this area.  Deep down beneath the town is its greatest secret, a honeycomb of over one hundred wine cellars once interconnected and used as escape routes from Moorish and other invaders. Now serving as atmospheric tasting rooms for the many producers and distributors of the region.
